The Set Up
Starts off looking at senery, senery of the trees, a lake, a cemetary, a house, and then an empty rocking chair. Throughout the senery, a man's voice is talking about the set up, more so he is preparing the listener for the story he is about to tell. We learn his name is Donald and that he's been through many hardships (he is very vague about his story in the beginning).
The Inciting Incident
Donald goes to war, but he makes his wife, Ana, promise that if he dies, that she will move on with her life and that she won't die with him. When Donald is in the war, there was an explosion in the bunker he was in. in a hustle to get out, everyone scrambles and his dogchain got ripped off. Donald had to go into hiding in the woods for a few days, losing his platoon and his dogtag. *FLASHBACK* When Donald sees his friend die next to him, he thinks of his little brother drowning when they were young, Donald couldn't save his brother in time. He feels as if he's failed. Generals go to Ana's house and tell her that Donald was lost in the war. She is mourining for a time, but then remembers her promise and tries to move on. While this is happening, Donald has been trying to contact headquarters but he is in a dangerous spot. He walks through the woods for a long time and ultimately finds a man who can help. the man doesn't have a car, so he treats him and takes care of his various broken bones at home. There is no service at this mans house, but Donald knows that Ana will be waiting for him when he returns. The only thing he's really waiting for is for the man to fix his plane to bring Donald home.
Rising Action
Ana has most definitely started her new life. She found a man and they have a child, about 3 years old. Ana was planning to move out of her house, finally, to move into the one that her and her new husband had bought. When she was at their old house packing up, Donald comes home. She is in utter disbelief and doesn't know if she's thrilled he's back or not. But she lies and says that she was just moving some things out so she could fit the new furnature that she bought when he asked about the furnature at the curb. Her and Donald are together that night, but in the morning when she "goes to the market" like she always used to do, she goes to see her other family. Ana struggles with the thought of telling her husband, but doesn't. She leaves that day after seeing her new husband and never returns.
The Climax
Ana suddenly falls ill with a rare, rapid moving cancer. Donald loves her as if she knows nothing, but she has been acting differently since he came home from the war. The doctor said the only thing thats keeping Ana alive is tension, like her body won't let go. She calls Donald into her room, everything is very quite, the floor creaking underneath his feet. He pulls up a chair next to her bed when she reaches for him. She tells him that she's kept a secret for so long. She tells his everything about her husband and her child, how she left them to do what was right, but she wanted to keep her promise for him. She says that the childs name is Thomas, named after Donald's last name, Thompson. She says she doesn't ask for forgiveness because she did nothing wrong and that she's been a good wife. When she says she regrets not having children with Donald, she says "he looks just like you", she dies. Donald is in a whirl of emotions. At first he's shocked that she's past on, he screams her name and lays on her chest for a while. Then he rises, looks her over, kisses her forehead and says "i won't die with you, either". This is where Donald debates about finding Thomas or not. He continues to have flashbacks as he's going through Ana's records. He decides he doesn't want to, but when his mother comes to the funeral, she says she knows how hard it must be. He was so good to her, his brother would have been proud. After this, Donald has made up his mind to find Thomas.
The Falling Action
Donald starts looking through Ana's records and finds a file to have her last name changed to her new husbands. Using that name, he looks it up in the phone book for their area and finds an address. When he goes, he sees a man pulling out of the driveway. Donald is trying to get his attention, the man is distracted and gets t-boned by another car. Donald flees the scene. He looks deeper, finds Thomas at his college because there was an R.I.P. sign infront of the school.
The Resolution
Thomas and Donald meet akwardly at first, kind of like "the man who walks by a lot" sort of thing. When Donald finds out that Thomas is colorblind, Donald knows that Thomas is his child.
Hi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteYou didn't seem to finish your outline. Much of what you have so far is great. My only suggestion is to revisit the "set up" section because it seems like rather than to describe the set up, you've done more work to describe the opening scene instead. This might be a better place to get at some of the background information and to help set up the story for us.
Finish it up and re-post ASAP!
Ms. B
I really like the outline for your story! I think the story line is very compelling and a great idea. The only thing I would say you should work on is slowing down the time. I feel like I read that the little boy was 3 years old and then he was immediately in college. There wasn't any real sense of time. Other than that I think your story's great!

I like the way the details about Donald and Ana's lives are pulled in gradually one by one... the only thing that confused me in the summary was, what was going on with the mysterious man in the car accident?
ReplyDeleteYour story sounds interesting, but I have to agree with Natalie, you should slow your story down a bit, but other than that, nice job!
ReplyDeleteI think you did a very good job and the story is intriguing. Although, I got a little confused about the falling action and what the significance of the man getting hit by the car is.
ReplyDeleteGood job though :)
