Blog #2 - Goals

I have set many goals for myself this year, one of them being to take this class in the first place. The goals for this class are more specific, however. For this class I plan to do my work, but to do it thoughtfully. I will mostly try to add variety to my writing. I have been writing poems and short stories since I was about eight years old. Needless to say, my writing can get a bit stingy and sound like that eight year old writing just to get my feelings down on paper. I don't want to just simply put down what I feel, but now with my writing I want to make other people feel, too. The topics in the class will mostly be given to me, but in terms of tone and risk-taking, I want to grow. My mother always told me “don’t knock it ‘till ya try it” and I believe that this concept can go into my writing as well. Rarely do I write poems anymore and I don’t think I’ve written a narrative in quite some time. Along with this goal, I would like to be more thoughtful when writing and ask myself the questions “What feeling would the reader have right now after reading this paragraph?” When I write, I want to tell a story, and with these new goals in mind that is exactly what I plan to do.
